When Is Rakhi | Raksha Bandhan 2013?

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates bond and relationship of a brother and sister.

Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Wednesday, august 21, 2013.

The festival is marked by the tying of a rakhi, or holy thread, which comes in many colors and designs, by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her as she presents sweets to him. The brother usually presents his sister with an envelope filled with money, though other presents such as saris and clothing can be given. The brother and sister traditionally feed one another sweets. These sweets include anything from Jalebi, Kaju Katli, and Burfi. Since Indian kinship practices give cousins a status similar to siblings, girls and women often tie the rakhi to their male cousins as well (referred to as "cousin-brothers" in regional parlance) in several communities.

It is widely celebrated as a festival across India and around the world.

When is Shravan Mas 2013 | Shravan Month

Shravan is a month of the Hindu calendar. In India's national civil calendar, Shravan is the fifth month of the Hindu year, beginning in late July and ending in the third week of August. This year Shravan  Masa is from July 23 to August 21Whereas in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, this holy month will begins on August 7, 2013 and ends on September 5.

Story of Shravan Month
According to Over Great Saints says that Samudra Manthan i.e. the churning of oceans by Gods and demons took place in the month of Shravan. It was decided that all the things which would come out from the ocean would be share between Gods and demons. 14 divine items emerged from ocean and where divided accordingly. But when a most deadly poison called Halahal came out, it created panic among Gods and demons. Nobody was the taker of the Halahal poison. At this critical situation Lord Shiva appeared. He accepted the pot of poison and drank in such a manner that the poison could not able to surpass his throat. The effect of the poison was so strong that the whole throat turned blue. Since then lord Shiva named as NeelKanth(means blue throat) . To reduce the strong effect of poison all the Gods started offering Gangajal to Lord Shiva.
This lessened the effect of poison to some extent. Since, all this happened in the month of Shravan, we offer the Ganges water to Lord Shiva during Shravan. Worshiping Lord Shiva during Shravan is said to fulfil all your wishes. Besides religious benefits Shravan Maas also accompanies a series of auspicious days and festivals.
"Shravan maas blessings to you and your family.

May the almighty Lord Shiva bless you all with

good things and perfect health."

Bolanath Mahadev Bhagavan ki Jay Ho!

History of Friendship Day

Friendship Day was initially promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to be 2 August and a day when people celebrated their friendships by sending cards. The second of August was chosen as the centre of the largest lull between holiday celebrations. Friendship Day was promoted by the greeting card National Association during the 1920s but met with consumer resistance - given that it was her too obviously a commercial gimmick to promote greetings cards.
Some friends acknowledge each other with exchanges of gifts and cards on this day. Friendship bands are very popular in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and parts of South America.
The idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed on 20 July 1958 by Dr. Artemio Bracho during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a town on the River Paraguay about 200 miles north of Asuncion.

Out of this humble meeting of friends, the World Friendship Crusade was born. The World Friendship Crusade is a foundation that promotes friendship and fellowship among all human beings, regardless of race, colour or religion. Since then, 30 July has been faithfully celebrated as Friendship Day in Paraguay every year and has also been adopted by several other countries.

" Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in
front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me
and be my friend "

About Guru Purnima

Every year, Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full Moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadh, which corresponds with the Gregorian month July.

The day of Guru Purnima is dedicated to the Guru - anyone who has nurtured you or gurided you on something which you treasure dearly and holds value for you in your life. In the ancient India, the day belonged to rishis and saints who held within them immense knowledge. Their disciples would pay special respects on the occasion of Guru Purnima. This culture is alive even today. Let us all come together to express our gratitude to all who have given us anything, or uplifted us in any way. They may be your friends, family, teachers and all loved ones.

What is Guru Purnima?

Let us first understand the significance of Guru Purnima while celebrating this great festival. In Indian culture, Gurus are considered as the people of highest priority in one’s life. Hindus initiate everything with blessings of their Guru (mentor). Relation of a mentor (Guru) and disciple is of great importance in India. That is why day of Guru Purnima is exclusively dedicated to the pay gratitude toward the mentors and teachers by disciples. Everybody has mentors in life and the life of a person is incomplete without a teacher and a mentor.

About Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is a day sacred to the memory of the great sage Vyasa, the guru of gurus and 'father of our scriptures'. All Hindus are indebted to this ancient saint who edited the four Vedas, wrote the 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavata.

गुरु ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णु: गुरुदेव महेश्वर: ।

गुरु साक्षात्परब्रह्म तस्मैश्री गुरुवे नम: ।

It means – Guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. He is the personification of supreme power. Hence, we venerate him with great honour.

The word Guru is derived from two words, 'Gu' and 'Ru' . The Sanskrit root "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru" denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore one who removes darkness of our ignorance is a Guru. One cannot define a Guru from his look, as ancient Gurus used to clad themselves in saffrons or whites. A Guru can be anyone, a book, a child, an incident or anything that teaches you something. You can consider a person as a personified form of Guru but it is not always important.

Importance of  Guru Purnima

Guru is given a higher position then God, because of his qualities and qualification. Guru is called Brahma. Teacher gives a new birth to his students. Guru is true Mahadev because he forgives all flaws done by his disciple.

In India, Guru is given spiritual, religious and political significance. During the times of trouble, teachers have shown a new path to this nation. They do not just a teacher but, they tell a person that how to come out from any kind of problem and danger.

Guru takes an individual to light from darkness. In simple words, he can be called the mass of knowledge.

As you walk with the Guru,

you walk in the light of Existence,
away from the darkness of ignorance.
You leave behind all the problems of your life and
move towards the peak experiences of life.

Best Wishes to you on this Guru Purnima
   Happy Guru Purnima
